Sad News from Canada

In substance the conservative Prime Minister with the help of the Governor General, who represents the Crown, decreed yesterday to a reprieve of Parliament until January 26, 2009.
Α crashing majority of the members of parliament consider the Prime Minister, on the basis of his deeds, as incompetent to cope with the economic crisis that the country is facing and were to vote negative on a vote of confidence scheduled to take place next week. This would have resulted into a fall of the present conservative government and new federal elections.
But this gentleman, Steven Harper is his name, does not want to give up office and in desperation and with the irresponsible help of the Governor General he resorted to what amounts to a constitutional coup by gaging the democratically elected members of the legislative body of Canada.
The horrifying thing is that Canada's constitution stipulates that this non elected person called Governor General, if he wants to, can silence Parliament if a Prime Minister and in this case a rogue prime minister, asks him to do so. Did this peculiar Dame that holds the office of the Governor General realize what she was doing? I am sure she does. Most likely she conceded so as to rid herself of the brand that she is pro-quebecoise, something of which she had been chided about by the press when she was appointed to the post of the Governor General. So, now, the personal interests of this non-elected person play havoc with the basic democratic institution of the country.
Anyhow with their deed Canada in one stroke regressed back to the 19th century. And of course the crucial question remains as to why does the constitution as amended allows this meddling with the country's democratic institutions.
This deed of Mr Harper and Dame Michaelle Jean surpasses in meddling and democratic damage even the Australian Constitutional Crisis of 1975. In the latter case the opposition that pulled the coup, again with the consent of some Governor General, at least commanded a majority in the country's Senate.
In some sort of an interview that he gave after the coup this Harper man showed all his pettiness, coming out with ultra incendiary statements as if he is bent on dividing the people of Canada.
It is certain that Harper has some important backing to dare come out with such outrageous remarks. The circles that back him up should realize that one and all stand to gain far more by harmoniously uniting things that in the mind of a person with cro-magnon mentality, as is the case with Mr Harper, appear to be forever in opposition.
Things are changing down South. Let' s hope for some moderation in this cro-magnion mentality that has upset the long democratic traditions of Canada.
